Wix Thoughts

Depending on your needs for a website, Wix may or may not be for you. I’m going to state it upfront with you. My opinion of Wix is that I do not like it, as a developer. Sure if you aren’t worried about customizing (from a developer’s view) for the most part, then maybe Wix is for you.

You ask, why don’t I like Wix?

There are so many reasons that I can think of that I don’t like Wix. To name a few, you can’t change your theme. You are stuck with it. You must start over from scratch if you want a different theme. Other things include you can’t export files, can’t edit css files, and more. I will go over pros and cons and what I might recommend instead of Wix. Please note that I am not attacking you if Wix is your website editor of choice. I am voicing my opinion and hopefully sharing some good information.

350 Templates to choose from

PROS – There are many good looking templates to choose from. Some in fact are very professional and impressive. Whatever your site is about there is surely a template/theme to choose from. You can change colors and font choices among many other things.

CONS – There are plenty of themes to choose from but once you’ve selected a theme you are stuck with it, short of starting from scratch. If you want a different theme you have to start all over from scratch.

RECOMMENDATIONS – Thought there are many good themes to choose from I would recommend choosing a WordPress site (if you have your own domain purchased) or Weebly (good for free sites) Both of these website builders give you tons more customization options than Wix in my opinion.

Domain & Ads

PROS – Wix offers free websites so that you don’t have to spend money, that is if you don’t mind having ads.

CONS – Your domain url isn’t very easy to remain, for example : http://services057.wix.com/fine-art. Not exactly a url that I would remember. I could remember something like landscapeart.com much easier. If you don’t want to have your ads on your site, you have to upgrade and pay $6.21 (normally $12.42) per month for the lowest premium plan that removes ads. That would get pricey quite fast if you ask me.

RECOMMENDATIONS – If you have a domain purchased already I would use WordPress. If you want a free site I’d use Weebly. Both do not have ads that are placed on your site and you can use your own domain name so it is easier for customers/readers to find and remember your site.

Locked In

PROS – If you have a temporary site or not needing a professional site this won’t matter.

CONS – If you are wanting a professional site you are unable to export files. This is very bad should you decide to move your site outside of Wix. You will have to start from scratch.

RECOMMENDATIONS – For this I would recommend again both WordPress and Weebly. You can export your files and go to another provider if you so desire.

Responsiveness

PROS – Wix advertises that your site will work great on mobile devices and tablets. You get exactly what they say, make your site look good on mobile.

CONS – Wix has a different version of your site used for the mobile devices. That isn’t very good as ideally you would edit one site that is for both desktop and mobile versions.

RECOMMENDATIONS – Again, I would recommend either WordPress or Weebly as they have many responsive themes where you only have to edit it in one spot.

There you go. I have spilled the beans. I hope this information has been helpful to you. If you have not gotten yet I would not recommend using Wix as your website editor, but that is just my two cents. Take it or leave it.
